This is is my weekly speed link post. It is here that I note the web sites that I have run across that interest me – whether it be related to work or play.
Application Development
- I heard about PnPGuidence on episode 262 of .NET Rocks with guest David Hayden. Looks like a really good resource for Patterns and Practices.
- Scott Mitchell has written a great article for the 4 Guys from Rolla.com website about the pros of using UTC time instead of server time in .NET applications.
- This post by Tod McKenna explains the differences between CAST(), STR() and TRANSFORM() in Visual FoxPro. He talks about both the speed and functionality of the functons.
- Jeff Atwood has posted an entertaining article on the importance of discipline in Application Development. I agree with everything he has to say, but sometimes find it difficult to follow the advice.
- Two posts on The Code Project caught my interest. 1) Simple Delegates In C#! The most basic! for newbies. 2) Data Binding an Enum with Descriptions.
- Scott Hanselman is starting a new weekly series called The Weekly Source Code, in which he will share some code links that he has found interesting. This series should be very informative. Then again, what comes from Scott Hanselman that is not informative?
- Ben Scheirman has an informative post on Elegant ASP.NET Caching. He goes into detail on how caching can be an effective performance tuning technique.
- Eric Wendelin explains 10 things you didn’t know about FireBug. I do not know much about Firebug yet, but these pointers look like they will be helpful.
Blogging Tools and Advice
- Jeff Atwood gives us blogging advice in his post titled 13 Blog Cliches. Looks like I have some work to do.
Self-Improvement, Productivity and Career
- Ben Watson has a well written account of his Google interviewing experience. The post explains ways we can better ourselves as application developers. I found it interesting from beginning to end.
- The Monster Career Advice Blog has posted a series of articles for what they call “Update your resume week”.
- Ian McKenzie has posted an interesting series on procrastination called Inside the mind of a Procrastinator.
- The Dumb Little Man website has a good post on 9 Ways to Have a Better Day than Yesterday. I needed to read this after a couple of the days I had this week.
- This is different and I like it. There are always lists that say what to do to be more productive, but Tim Ferriss has gone a step further to give you a Not-To-Do list.
Sports, Entertainment and Everything Else
- This Nickelback video (”Rockstar”) was fun to watch. Just enough mix of stars and everyday people.
- Anyone who owns a cat knows that this cartoon is the honest truth.
- ColorLovers have posted a group of beautiful butterfly pictures.
